Day 6
Yesterday I intended to go to the Musee d'Orsay but its closed on Mondays. So I headed over to the Louvre to see what thats about. My guidebook said I could get a discounted price if I went in after 3 and the museum would stay open until 9:45. Unfortunately my guide book was horribly wrong. First of all you don't get the €6 price until 6pm and only on Wednesdays and Fridays. No problem. So I payed full price and went in to the Denon wing. I saw Winged Victory and the Mona Lisa and heaps upon heaps of huge religious paintings... and then they announced that they would "begin to close" (which actually means "absolutely must have everyone out")at 5:45. So I saw ONE floor of ONE wing of the Louvre. Extensively, but still less than a tenth of what is in there. So I sat in the park outside and read for a while. Which in France is apparently a mating call. Four guys (well 3 guys and one old man)came and sat beside me and tried to talk to me in broken English. Claude-Eric gave me his card in case I wanted to go out for a drink. And another boy (who I talked to for a long time but I don't remember his name) tried to ask me out on a date. Don't sit by yourself outside the Louvre unless you're serious.I might be getting homesick,I've been to McDonalds 3 times since I've been here. I only went once in London. But then I never eat at McDonalds at home... and the ones here are much tastier. And I have every intention of going to a KFC before I leave. I was suprised to find them in London and Paris. I could do with some greenbeans, corn, mac and cheese, and a biscuit. Last night Valentine and I made made croque monsieur: basically a grilled cheese with the bread dipped in milk first with ham, in her case, tomato in mine. We also had vegetables and a delicious molten chocolate dessert. Mmmm. Today I have to get the motivation to move. It's a great day outside and I'm going to hit the museums.

Hi Brannon -- can't wait to read your dad's reactions to your reading on a bench and being hit on by four men. Be careful! :-) Sounds like you're having a good time and seeing some incredible sights. Love you!
Good morning, Beautiful!
Did you try biscuits yet? Do you remember when you used to make biscuits at home? You made wonderful biscuits the week of the big storm in '93.
Remember that all you have to do if you get really homesick is come home.
And I hope you meet some nice guys (I'm not opposed to her meeting good guys, Carol, & I don't expect European guys to be blind, deaf and dumb. :-)) But be vigilant! If only one in a thousand is a truly a bad guy, there are lots of bad guys.
Not a lot happening here right now. I'm trying to talk your Mom into going up to Jonesborough, Tenn for a weekend during my break to the National Storytelling Festival. I don't know if that'll work out. If it doesn't I may reward myself for a few pounds lost by judging the Chili Cook-off again. As of this morning I'm at the lowest weight I've been in about ten years. Of course that's the easy weight loss -- getting further will take a little willpower.
It turns out, we'll be one of only three school systems in Georgia in school today. I'm in the middle of my "butterfly" unit... frantically trying to keep a few monarch caterpillars supplied with enough milkweed to survive. I expect the largest will have made its chrysalis by the time I get there today. & I better get going.
I hope you get the phone issue settled soon . I still have to get my passport, ERG!!!
I love you girl. Remember my first post... there's lots of love and warm wishes reflecting off celestial objects from Rome to Paris!!!

Hi Brannon! Reading your blog is really fueling my wanderlust!
What a wonderful day you described! -- visiting the Louvre, reading on a park bench, talking with strangers in a foreign (to you) language... A shame though that you had to pay full price at the Louvre and didn't get to spend as much time as you wanted.
Pay attention to your Daddy's cautions about your connections with strange (in the sense of unfamiliar) men!
We miss you and are anxious to hear a live-and-in-person account of your travels. Love you. Aunt Joan
Hey Brannon! I just got caught up on your week :-) I REALLY want to go see the Louvre (and, you know, all the other places from the Divinci Code - ha). Things have been hella crazy around here, what with CHORUS LINE and GTC coming up and all.... ahhhh!
Well, I must be getting back to my studies (why is it that I have all of my big tests/progects/papers due this week....2 weeks before midterm!! It's insanity)
I hope you get a chance to put up some Paris pics soon!
My kids were delirious today because one of the caterpillars made its chrysalis overnight. Another had crawled to the top of our butterfly house today. I hope he waits for school time to make his chrysalis so we can watch.
Mom and I watched the new Martin Scorsese film about Bob Dylan on PBS last night and tonight. It certainly made me feel old to see the musical heroes of my teens as old geezers. It was neat to see all the behind-the-scenes film of Dylan, the New Lost City Ramblers, Seeger, the Clancy Brothers, Van Ronk, Baez, PP&M from the late fifties and sixties. It reinforced my opinion that Dylan is and was always a very genuine visionary genius and a very genuine weirdo.
I had hoped to watch Commander in Chief too. It's the new drama about a woman president (Geena Davis). I didn't realize it came on during the Dylan special. Since we are losing President Bartlet soon, it would be nice to have another (unfortunately imaginary) statesman president during the 1210 days left under you-know-Who in the real world.
I asked our county tech guy to get your blog approved by our internet screen so I can check it at school and maybe let my kids see some of your pics & follow your progress across Europe. He said he'd see what he could do.
I'm going to try to get to school earlier tomorrow, so I better get to bed. It's almost time for you to get up!!
Have a great day in Paris!!
